Support for Care Leavers
Investing in Independence: The Sherwood Life Skills Launchpad
Every year, thousands of young people across Merton and Mitcham reach the age of 18 and are asked to do something that most of us would find impossible: become a fully functioning, independent adult overnight. For those in the care system, there is no “Bank of Mum and Dad,” no childhood bedroom to return to if things go wrong, and often, no one to call when a fuse blows or a budget fails.
This transition is frequently described as a “cliff edge.” One day, a young person is supported by the state; the next, they are expected to manage a tenancy, maintain a household, and secure a career. Without a family safety net, the stakes are incredibly high. Statistical data consistently shows that care leavers are at a significantly higher risk of homelessness, unemployment, and social isolation. This isn’t due to a lack of ambition, but a lack of infrastructure. They have the drive, but they haven’t been given the toolkit.
Why Sherwood Park Hall?
As a Community Anchor, Sherwood Park Hall is uniquely positioned to bridge this gap. We are more than just a venue; we are a “Hall with a Heart” that provides the stable governance and warmth necessary for vulnerable young people to take risks and learn. We believe that independence is a skill that can be taught. By hosting the Sherwood Life Skills Launchpad, we are transforming our space into a practical laboratory for life.
Support for care leavers is not just a moral imperative; it is a vital investment in our local community. When a young person has the skills to maintain their home and manage their finances, they become contributors to the local economy, stable neighbors, and future leaders. We are moving away from the model of “crisis management” and toward a model of Investable Infrastructure.
The Transformation: From Surviving to Soaring
The Sherwood Life Skills Launchpad is a 12-week, high-impact curriculum designed to turn a daunting transition into a structured journey of growth. This course improves lives in three distinct ways:
Physical Resilience: Through hands-on DIY and home-maintenance workshops, students learn to respect and care for their living environment. Knowing how to fix a leak or wire a plug builds a sense of agency and pride in their surroundings, reducing the likelihood of tenancy breakdown.
Economic Empowerment: Our financial literacy modules move beyond simple “budgeting.” We teach the psychology of money, how to navigate bills, and how to save for the future. By providing “Culinary Essentials,” we ensure that nutritional health is accessible on a shoestring budget.
Social Capital: Perhaps most importantly, the Launchpad creates a “family of choice.” By learning in a cohort, care leavers build a peer support network and connect with mentors from the local community, breaking the cycle of isolation that so often leads to mental health challenges.
Your Opportunity to Invest: Donation Packages
We are inviting the community and our corporate partners to fund the literal “Lifelines” that make this program possible. Each donation tier is designed to provide a tangible, measurable outcome.
£150: The Culinary Essentials Grant (Family & Wellbeing) Nutrition is the foundation of wellbeing. This grant funds 10 “First Kitchen” kits. Most care leavers move into their first flat with nothing. This package provides high-quality sauté pans, essential utensils, and a “Budget 101” recipe guide tailored to low-cost, high-nutrition meals. You are ensuring that 10 young people have the tools to cook with dignity.
£500: The Home Maintenance Toolkit (Community Anchor) A house only becomes a home when you have the power to maintain it. This donation sponsors 10 professional-grade toolkits, including hammers, screwdriver sets, and basic hardware, alongside our “Home Hero” DIY manual. This investment prevents small household issues from escalating into major repairs, keeping our local housing stock—and our young people—in good health.
£1,200: The Full Candidate Scholarship (Investable Infrastructure) This is our most impactful tier. This fully funds one young person’s entire 12-week journey. It covers the cost of expert instructors, all workshop materials, and the “Graduation Toolkit” they take with them into their new life. By sponsoring a candidate, you are providing a comprehensive bridge from the care system to a career.
The Founding Partner: Community Match-Funding We are seeking a partner to match the donations raised by the public at the Sherwood Festival. By doubling the community’s effort, you signal your commitment to Merton’s future and secure a permanent place on our “Founders Wall” within the Hall.
A Grounded Future
