Inside the Session: Purposeful Play & Sensory Exploration
At Little Learners SEND, we don’t just provide “childcare”—we provide purposeful play. Our sessions are carefully curated to stimulate the senses, build motor skills, and encourage social interaction at a pace that feels safe for every child.
Our Sensory-Focused Activities include:
-
Tactile & Messy Play: We use a variety of textures—from kinetic sand and water beads to “edible” paints—to help children process different touch sensations. This is essential for building fine motor skills and reducing sensory defensiveness.
-
The Calming Corner & Visual Aids: For children who become easily overwhelmed, we provide a dedicated “low-stimulation” zone with fiber-optic lights, bubble tubes, and weighted blankets to help them self-regulate.
-
Proprioceptive Movement: We use “heavy work” activities like soft-play climbing, tunnel crawling, and weighted ball games. These activities help children understand where their bodies are in space, improving balance and coordination.
-
Auditory & Rhythm Circles: Using soft percussion instruments and rhythmic patterns, we help children improve their listening skills and communication through the universal language of music.
The “Why” Behind the Play
For a child with special needs, these activities are more than just fun; they are developmental milestones.
-
Communication: A child might find it hard to speak, but they can communicate their joy through a sensory tray.
-
Independence: Choosing which texture to play with builds decision-making skills and confidence.
-
Regulation: Learning how to move from a high-energy activity to a calm one is a “superpower” that helps children cope with the world outside the hall.
Expert Note: All our activities are designed to be “failure-free.” In our hall, there is no right or wrong way to play—only the child’s way.
